Because of the high cost of fuel, fleet managers are always looking for ways in which they can reduce expenditure when it comes to fuel consumption. Fuel expenses take up a third of a fleets expenditure, and it is, therefore, the most considerable expense in fleet management.

Many factors in fleet management may determine how much money is going towards fuel. However, the good news is that fleet managers can employ specific strategies to ensure that fuel costs in their companies go down. One of the strategies that fleet managers can use to reduce fuel consumption and ultimately, fleet costs is the usage of gas cards for business.

A sound gas card system will enable fleet managers to control fuel expenditure and hold employees accountable for misuse of gas.

Here are other strategies that fleet managers can use to reduce fuel expenditure in their companies. 

  1. Check Your Tires

Maintaining the best tire pressure will enable you to spend much less on fuel. As a fleet manager, you will have to use the correct tools that can help you to manage your tire pressure. Through a study, the U.S Department of Energy figured out that for every pound per square inch drop in tire pressure, the gas mileage lowers by about 0.4 per cent.

You should, therefore, check your tires and ensure that wheels are appropriately aligned to reduce fuel efficiency.  

  1. Ensure You Rightsize

Rightsizing, your fleet plays a significant role in the reduction of fuel costs. As the fleet manager, you should be able to match vehicles with the needs of the organization and cut off the ones that may not be beneficial to you.

When you rightsize your vehicles, you may have to either cut down on the number of vehicles that are used in your fleet or utilize smaller vehicles that are more fuel-efficient.

One of the priorities of having a particular vehicle in a fleet should be that it can serve its purpose functionally. If it doesn’t, it’s time to give it the boot. Choose vehicles that are more efficient with smaller engines, lower vehicle weight and more fuel-efficient for your fleet. 

  1. Track Your Routes

Implement the use of GPS tracking systems to track your routes. This has the potential of providing you with shorter route options for your vehicles. When you implement GPS tracking, you have a better understanding of the routes, and you are able to better maximize on routes that can help you to cut out extra mileage.

Many times, drivers take long courses, but this is detrimental to a fuel management system. 

  1. Emphasize On Driver Behaviour

How your drivers conduct themselves on the can prove to either reduce or increase fuel usage on the road. It is a crucial factor to fuel expenditure.

For example, habits such as over speeding, hard braking and accelerating too quickly have been known to increase fuel usage. Educate your drivers on the best driving practices such as driving safely and within the recommended speed limits to lower fuel usage.
